Permits

The Permit office of the Building Code Enforcement branch is the starting and ending point for most construction projects. The section is the addressing authority for properties within Houston city limits and consist of Permit Technicians who prove three main services:

• Facilitate the online permitting process
• Assign addresses for properties located in the city of Houston
• Process Lake Houston pier billing

Building Permit Application Processing

The building permit application process is completed via the iPermits portal. Once the application process is complete, a project number will be assigned. The project number is a unique number that all of the permits associated with project will be pulled under.

Plan submittal

Once the application process is complete, an invitation will be sent to the applicant's email address on file to upload/submit plans via ProjectDox.

Permit Processing:

• Building Permits – Once the plans are reviewed and the permit is ready for purchase, the permit office will collect the permit application and create a Sales Order to take to the cashiers or process the payment for Advance Payment Account holders. Review the Advance Pay Account guidelines for more information or complete the application to request an account.
• Trade Permits (Electrical, Plumbing, Boiler and Mechanical)
• Earth Hauling Permits
• Fire Alarm & Sprinkler Permits
• Demolition Permits (review the demolition guideline)
• Driveway/Sidewalk Permits
• Miscellaneous Fees

License Registrations/Bonds

• Processing of Driveway/Sidewalk Bonds (see the bond form template)
• Fire Alarm and Sprinkler Contractor Registration

Note: Trade Contractors are licensed by the various Inspection Sections. Please see the Inspections page for more information.

Address Assignment or Permit Changes

• Assignment and verification of addresses
• Address Changes
• Change of Contractor on building permits
• Applicant changes on building permits

For your convenience we offer online permitting. The following permits may be purchased by the properly licensed and registered individual online:

• Plumbing
• Electrical
• Mechanical (HVAC)
• Saw Pole (ES)
• Temporary Gas Inspection (PG)
• Medical Gas Permit (PM)
• Boiler
• Demolition (Sewer disconnect previously done)
• Sidewalk/Driveway Permit (A bond number is required on most cases) Note: A Project number previously set up will need to be provided
